How to Use the Economic Calendar
An economic calendar lists scheduled releases of major macroeconomic indicators and policy events from countries around the world. Knowing in advance about events such as the US CPI, Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP) and FOMC interest-rate decisions helps you anticipate market-moving volatility.
The ZivFin calendar shows the country, importance level, forecast, previous and actual values for each release. When the actual print materially differs from the forecast, the affected currency or asset class can move sharply in either direction.
Key Indicator Terms
CPI (Consumer Price Index)
Measures the change in prices of a basket of consumer goods and services. The headline gauge of inflation and a key input into central-bank decisions.
GDP (Gross Domestic Product)
Total value of all goods and services produced by a country in a given period. The most basic measure of economic growth.
NFP (Non-Farm Payrolls)
Released by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics on the first Friday of each month, NFP measures changes in non-farm payroll employment and is a key gauge of US labor-market health.
Central Bank Rate Decisions
Policy meetings of the Fed, ECB, BOJ and others. Decisions to hike, cut or hold rates — together with the accompanying statement — typically have an immediate effect on equities, bonds and FX.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the importance rating determined?
Each event is rated 1 to 3 stars based on its expected market impact. Three-star events (US CPI, FOMC, etc.) tend to drive large moves across many asset classes.
Why is the difference between forecast and actual important?
Markets price in the consensus forecast ahead of release. When the actual number deviates meaningfully from the forecast, prices typically reprice quickly to reflect the surprise.
How are the times displayed?
The calendar automatically detects your browser's time zone and converts each release to your local time.
